ANAVI Handle is an open source hardware adapter built around a XIAO module and Raspberry Pi RP2040 microcontroller that connects a Wii Nunchuk to a computer via USB. It can turn the Nunchuk into a PC joystick, mouse or keyboard, making it useful for much more than retro gaming. It was released on the market back in 2024 and is nowadays globally available from Crowd Supply and Mouser, as well as Lectronz for people based in the EU. Thanks to its open source design and firmware written in CircuitPython, ANAVI Handle can be customized for different applications and creative workflows.

In a his recent video John Dingley explores a creative way to use ANAVI Handle by turning a Wii Nunchuk into a compact macro pad for his DaVinci Resolve workflow. DaVinci Resolve is a professional video editing and post-production software used for video editing, visual effects, color grading, and audio production. Instead of reaching for a traditional keyboard or a large macro pad, John uses the Nunchuk’s joystick and two buttons to trigger the commands he uses most often, including split clip, ripple delete, and undo. The result is a surprisingly simple controller that fits naturally in the hand and can make repetitive editing tasks feel much more intuitive. His video not only demonstrates the finished setup but also walks through the customization process step by step, showing that you don’t need to be an experienced programmer to create your own Nunchuk-based controller.

John’s setup is particularly interesting because it reflects his own approach to comfortable, efficient editing. He combines the Wii Nunchuk with a trackball mouse, allowing him to perform most of his editing with small finger movements while keeping his hands and wrists relaxed. With ANAVI Handle connected to his PC via USB, the Nunchuk becomes more than a gaming controller: it can act as a USB joystick, mouse or keyboard, opening up plenty of possibilities for custom workflows.

Kudos to John for making such a clever setup! Also, huge thanks for using open source hardware, and in particular, ANAVI Handle. Check out his video to see ANAVI Handle in action, get inspired and bring new life to your old Wii Nunchuk with your own custom setup!
